VCELOVINA is a tribute to bees. Bees don't only give us honey
or beeswax but something much more important - they
pollinate the plants we eat.
30% of the food we have in the world is thanks to bees
pollinating gardens and fields. Bees are workers, intelligent
and extremely useful for nature and mankind. Get to know
them more closely.
Half a kilo of honey: 2 million flowers
In order to produce half a kilo of honey, bees fly
as far as 90,000 kilometers and visit 2 million flowers.
A teaspoon of honey: the life's work of twelve bees
If you sweeten your tea or coffee with a spoonful of honey,
thank 12 bees. It takes twelve workers their whole life to
produce roughly this amount of honey.
Bees communicate and think
Bees are intelligent and they even have their own language,
which is rarely seen in nature.
They let each other know where and how plentiful the pasture is.
They can count to four
and recognize faces
Yes, you heard correctly. Bees can really count
to four and also recognize faces.
On top of that, they can categorize visual stimuli
and form abstract rules.
BEECAM
To see how bees actually work, we've installed a camera
in a beehive.
It runs continuously for over three years. The
bees aren't bothered by the camera
and this colony regularly
produces excellent results. In 2010, for example, these
bees
produced around 40kg of delicious honey for us.
At the end of 2009, our beecam was one of the 25 most interesting webcams of the year - awarded by one of the most popular websites
about web cameras - earthcam.com. Our bees are probably the most visible bees on the planet :-)
Now you know how bees think and work.
Discuss these facts over a glass of VCELOVINA.
